Fire damages trailer at tire shop

JOHNSTOWN — Fire destroyed a trailer outside a tire business in the Johnstown’s Coopersdale section on Friday.

Authorities are searching for what started the blaze about 3:30 p.m. near The Tire Clinic, 57 Coopersdale Ave.

The business specializes in retreading commercial truck tires, workers said.

“When they recap tires, the trailer holds the grindings, the rubber and steel,” city police Officer Erin Kabler said. “The workers were inside and they noticed the fire. The fire was so large they thought the roof might catch on fire.”

A spark from a grinder might have started the blaze, workers said. About eight workers were inside the building at the time.

Johnstown firefighters shot water onto the fire from the roof of the business.

Heavy smoke poured from the trailer, and the smell of burning rubber was prevalent.

No injuries were reported.

Workers said they never had a fire before.

The Tire Clinic has been in business for 23 years, according to its website.
