Fallen soldiers remembered

JOHNSTOWN — The names of three members of the U.S. military from the region who were killed during active duty since June 2010 were read on the Senate floor on Capitol Hill this week by Pennsylvania’s two senators.

Marine Sgt. Derek Lee Shanfield of Hastings, Marine Lance Cpl. Joshua Thomas Twigg of the Nicktown area and Marine Lance Cpl. Ralph John Fabbri of Gallitzin were remembered by Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey.

The three were part of a list of 41 fallen soldiers from Pennsylvania remembered for the sacrifice they made for the nation.

“I join with Sen. Toomey to express our profound gratitude for those who gave the last full measure of devotion for our country,” Casey said.

Toomey said the values of Pennsylvania are exemplified in the lives of the fallen who will forever be honored as Pennsylvania’s native sons and daughters.

“They represent all that is good about America,” he said.

All three men were killed in Afghanistan.
