SALIX — A state police fire marshal is being asked to determine the cause of a fire Friday evening that damaged a vacant house.

The house is up for sale in the 100 block of Oak Street in the area of the former Salix airport development.

Frank Hribar, Dunlo deputy fire chief, said firefighters did a good job of confining the fire to the family room on the first floor.

Also responding were volunteers from St. Michael and Summerhill Township as well as Forest Hills Ambulance.

Smoke forces evacuation of building in city

The main building in the Commerce Centre at 1001 Broad St. in Johnstown was evacuated Friday morning after smoke was reported in an elevator shaft.

Johnstown Fire Department members determined the source was a ventilation motor. No damage or injuries were reported.

College offers financial aid advice

LATROBE – St. Vincent College will offer financial aid presentations for college-bound high school students and their parents from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Feb. 27 at the Fred M. Rogers Center on campus.

Attendees will learn about the financial aid process and how to file the free application for federal financial aid.

Admission is free, but preregistration is requested.
