Envirothon competitors seek pollution solutions

JOHNSTOWN — It’s all about the environment.

High school students from 62 counties are taking part in the 29th annual Pennsylvania State Envirothon at Pitt-Johnstown and competing for recognition and scholarships by demonstrating their knowledge of environmental science and natural resource management.

Teams in attendance are Envirothon winners at the county level.

Northern Cambria High School is representing Cambria County, Rockwood Area High School is representing Somerset County and Everett Area High School represents Bedford County.

At the two-day competition, five-member teams participate in a series of field-oriented tests that cover five areas: Soils/land use, aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife and an environmental issue. This year, the environmental issue focuses on nonpoint source pollution and low impact technology.

On Tuesday, teams prepared and delivered oral presentations to a panel of judges who evaluated each team on its problem-solving capabilities, oral presentation skills and recommendations to help solve the specific environmental challenge.

“Teams were presented the challenge last Wednesday to begin to develop their plan,” said Lorelle Steach, Envirothon coordinator.

“They have 10 minutes to do their presentation and then 10 minutes of question and answer with the judges.”

Today, students will take written exams and be out in the field competing in hands-on challenges.
