Boating safety course available

SALTSBURG — Free Water Safety Day events will be held May 24 at the Loyalhanna Lake Bush Recreation Area near Saltsburg, Indiana County, as part of National Safe Boating Week, being observed from Monday through Friday next week.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District is teaming  with the National Safe Boating Council to promote safe and responsible boating during the observance. Several activities including boating safety courses are planned, organizers said.

The district is partnering with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission to offer the free basic boating course from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Lakeview Pavilion.

Those who successfully complete the course will be issued a Boating Safety Education Certificate that is good for a lifetime. The certificate is required to operate a personal watercraft or, for those born after Jan. 1, 1982, to operate motor-powered boats that are 25 horsepower or greater.

Participants must  preregister by calling April Richards, park ranger at the Loyalhanna Lake office, at 724-639-9013. The Army Corps of Engineers suggests attendees bring a lunch.
