BREAKING – Congressman Murtha's widow will not fill his seat

JOHNSTOWN — The widow of Congressman John Murtha will not seek the 12th Congressional District seat.

At the same time, though, Mark Critz – the congressman’s former district director – is expected to formally announce that he will enter the election.

There had been rampant speculation that Joyce Murtha would, at the very least, attempt to serve the remainder of her late husband’s unexpired term.

But the Murtha for Congress Committee today released a statement saying Mrs. Murtha believes it is “too soon after his death to be on the campaign trail.”

Meanwhile, Critz resigned today from his district director post and in an e-mail said he “will be making an announcement tonight or tomorrow.”

A message on Critz’s cell phone says: “Yes, I’m running to be the next congressman in the 12th District. I need your vote, and I need your support.”

Critz is a resident of Johnstown.
