Prospector makes find in Fairhope

SOMERSET — Paul Conroy, the commercial trucker interested in mechanized gold prospecting in Brush Run and Wills Creek, said Monday he already has found a few flakes in Somerset County.

His panning has turned up about $100 or $150 worth of gold.

“It’s for the recreation. I’m not going into it like gold rush Alaska,” said Conroy, 43.

Conroy has written to the state Department of Environmental Protection, telling officials of his intentions for small-scale mechanization in the Fairhope Township creeks.

He hasn’t formally applied for a permit.

The hobbyist said he has panned for the precious metal north of Interstate 80 and near Harrisburg.

Going for gold

Paul Conroy is looking for more people to join him in prospecting for gold. He said anyone interested can email him at or phone 233-2253.
