City police charge burglary suspect

— A Johnstown man was jailed Sunday on charges that he burglarized an auto sales business earlier this month.

City police charged Willie J. Gates, 43, with burglary, theft, receiving stolen property and criminal mischief.

In a criminal complaint, city police alleged that Gates broke into Horner Street Auto Sales at 830 Horner St. on July 16 by using a brick to smash a front door window.

Police said Gates damaged a computer monitor for the security camera system and a desktop computer system. He also is accused of stealing power and hand tools.

Officers identified Gates as the suspect after reviewing the surveillance footage.

Police said Gates reportedly had been in the business earlier that day trying to sell some items.

Gates, of the 800 block of Cypress Avenue, was arraigned by on-call District Judge Mary Ann Zanghi of Vinco and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $25,000 bond.
