Scam artist runs phony bike ad

JOHNSTOWN — Johnstown police are looking for the scam artist who placed a false classified advertisement in The Tribune-Democrat.

The newspaper learned that the ad was a scam Wednesday, the fifth day of its publication, when a couple of customers reported that something was amiss.

The ad said that there was a “1988 Honda GL 1500 motorcycle to be given away to a responsible person at no charge due to my son’s sudden death.” An email address was listed for interested parties to get in touch with the advertiser.

“We process thousands of ads monthly,” said Robin L. Quillon, publisher of The Tribune-Democrat. “We try very hard to make sure each and every one is proper and legitimate.

“Unfortunately, scam artists out there will try to slip one past us, and occasionally one does. We regret that they do, but when we realize that they are improper, we take immediately action and contact the proper authorities.”
