Police: 3-year-old found wandering while parents slept

JOHNSTOWN — Geistown police said a 3-year-old girl was found wandering near Bedford Street on  Wednesday and her parents were found asleep in a nearby apartment littered with trash and drug needles.

Kristopher G. Hogue, 26, of the 2600 block of Bedford Street, was charged with child endangerment, reckless endangerment and possession of drug paraphernalia.

In a criminal complaint, police said a neighbor found the girl with soiled clothing wandering on Bedford Street at 5:35 p.m.

Police said they found the apartment where the child lived and when they entered, they found Stephanie Mayes and an infant lying on a mattress and Hogue asleep in bed.

“The apartment was in complete disarray with clothing, toys and garbage thrown about the apartment,” according to the complaint.

Police said the air was foul and old food was in a pot on the stove. Hypodermic needles were found in an adjacent room where Mayes was sleeping.

A family member is caring for the two children, police said.

Hogue was arraigned by on-call District Judge Max Pavlovich of Richland Township and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $25,000 bond.

Police said charges against Mayes are pending.
