JOHNSTOWN — Two hunters died from apparent heart attacks Monday in Somerset County during the first hours of deer season.

Allen Webb, 71, of Paint Borough was found by others in his hunting party after being stricken early Monday in Gallitzin State Forest.

“He was at the bottom of a tree, where he was setting up a tree stand,” said Wallace Miller, Somerset County coroner.

Miller estimated that Webb died about 6:30 a.m. at the remote Ogle Township location.

The coroner was called to the scene, where he pronounced Webb dead at 12:10 p.m.

The second hunter, Robert George, 66, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., was stricken while hunting later Monday morning in Shade Township, Miller said.

George was taken to Windber Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m., Miller said.

The local deaths from natural causes were the only hunting-related incidents reported in Cambria, Somerset and Bedford counties, 911 supervisors said.

About 750,000 hunters are expected to take part in firearms deer season, which continues through Dec. 8.
