A Route 219 crash near Berlin ruptured a natural gas line and forced responders to close the highway for three hours, state police said.
Investigators said they had to evacuate surrounding homes as a precaution, saying natural gas was rapidly leaking after a
Berlin man crashed his Pontiac into the line and hit a utility pole.
The crash occurred on Berlin Plank Road near the Circle 219 Bar around 4:50 a.m. Sunday.
Tyler R. Vought, 22, of Berlin, swerved to avoid a deer on the road and hit the line, state police said.
Vought was uninjured, state police said.
Somerset County 911 officials said Somerset and Berlin volunteer fire departments responded, along with crews from Penelec and Columbia Gas, which capped the gas well about two hours after the crash.
The road was reopened at 7:42 a.m., a Somerset 911 supervisor said.
Woman allegedly stabs man over last beer
A Greensburg man was stabbed several times with a butcher knife Thursday by a woman angry he was drinking their last beer.
State police in Greensburg said Vanessa L. Robinson punched, kicked – and eventually stabbed the Hempfield Township man when he tried to leave with the Colt 45 beer.
He tried to defuse the situation by dumping the malt liquor onto the floor, which prompted her to grab a knife, police said.
The woman was lodged in Westmoreland County Jail.
The man has since been released from a Greensburg hospital.

Johnstown fire crews responded to a kitchen fire at a Moxham home Sunday.
The Park Avenue fire was quickly extinguished before
the fire spread or caused injury.
Assistant Fire Chief John Brudzinski said it was caused by an unattended stove.
Fight in home leads to assault charges for 2
A Portage pair were charged with assault Sunday following a fight in a Puritan Road home.
State police in Ebensburg said Heath Labar, 45, pulled a 9mm handgun on Susan Nemitz, 39, after she cut him and threw a beer mug at his face.
Labar also faces terroristic threats, police said.
Police: Man urinated on station floor
An Indiana man was charged with disorderly conduct and other counts after he urinated on a police station floor following his arrest Saturday, police said.
Indiana Borough police said Joshua Glinsky, 22, of Indiana, tried to flee The Coney bar on Philadelphia Avenue without paying his tab.
He also faces retail theft, public drunkenness and criminal mischief charges.
