This band travels at the speed of light.
River City Brass Band will present “The Power of Light” at 7:30 p.m. March 22 at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center in Richland Township.
Light will be captured in music in this multimedia performance, which will feature classical and popular music and a light show.
“There will be a laser light show onstage, and a high-definition movie will be shown while we’re playing,” band director James Gourlay said. “The whole concert is about the elements, and there will be gentle lighting in the audience.”
The audience can participate in one song by using glow sticks to provide special effects.
Gourlay said the show will open with a number by ’70s band Earth, Wind and Fire.
The group spanned the musical genres of rhythm and blues, soul, jazz, pop, rock, funk, disco, Latin, African and gospel. Their hits include “Shining Star,” “September,” “That’s the Way of the World” and “Got to Get You into My Life.”
The element of water will be included in “The Water Music” by Handel, a collection of orchestral movements often published as three suites.
The band also will take the audience into outer space with the selection “Into the Galaxy.”
“This is an eclectic mix, like my iPod on shuffle,” Gourlay said. “That’s what a brass band can do. It’s flexible and it’s nimble. It can change style from baroque to popular.”
River City Brass is often called the Boston Pops in Brass and “the band that put the fun back in music.”
“River City Brass Band is a premier ensemble throughout the United States,” said arts center executive director Michael Bodolosky. “They bring so much music to life with a lot of energy. It’s great to have them in our backyard.”
Bodolosky said a March Madness sale will price all tickets at $22 except for student tickets, which will be $10.
