Shuster gives GOP address

— Rep. Bill Shuster got the chance to be the voice of the Republican Party.

The 9th district’s congressman gave the GOP’s weekly address on Saturday. A link to his speech is being prominently displayed at

In the presentation, Shuster, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, discusses recent flight delays, caused by furloughs at the Federal Aviation Administration. He repeatedly blames President Barack Obama and sequestration cuts for negatively impacting travelers.

“This week, many Americans had their flights delayed or canceled because of the way in which the Obama administration chose to implement the president’s automatic sequestration cuts,” said Shuster, a Hollidaysburg resident. “Travelers were fed up, and rightly so. Sequestration is bad policy – the wrong way to reduce the deficit. That’s why House Republicans have voted twice to replace these automatic cuts with smarter ones.”

Sequestration went into effect March 1.

It created shallow across-the-board spending cuts, including to the FAA.

Shuster feels some members of the Obama administration let the extensive delays occur because they “thought inflicting pain on the public would give the president more leverage to avoid making necessary spending cuts, and to impose more tax hikes on the American people.”

Shuster voted for the Budget Control Act of 2011, the original piece of legislation that called for the sequestration if a bipartisan congressional committee could not agree to an alternative plan to cut spending.
