Laundry fight results in stab attempt

JOHNSTOWN — A resident of a group home in Johnstown was jailed Wednesday after police said he attacked another man with a knife.

In a criminal complaint, city police said Cory Cowan, 18, of Kittanning, was doing laundry on the second floor of Houston House when he got into an argument with with another man. Cowan reportedly told the man that if he didn’t take his clothes out of the dryer, Cowan was going to throw them out the window.

When the man threatened to punch Cowan in the face, Cowan went downstairs and retrieved a pocket knife from a desk drawer. Cowan began swinging the knife, slicing the man’s shirt, police said.

An employee subdued Cowan and took the knife away, police said. Police said Cowan told them he has “serious” anger problems.

Cowan was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault and disorderly conduct.

He was arraigned by on-call District Judge Mary Ann Zanghi of Vinco and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $25,000 bond.

Houston House, affiliated with The Christian Home of Johnstown Inc., is an emergency shelter and group home for boys in the 1100 block of Edson Avenue in the city’s 8th Ward.
