BOSWELL — Boswell Borough has a new bank.

Somerset Trust Co. opened a branch Wednesday inside Cougar Mini Mart, 802 Atkinson Way.

There has been no bank in Boswell since First National Bank of Pennsylvania closed its branch in November.

“There’s a community without a bank, and we wanted to be there for them,” said Roberta Lohr, senior vice president for Somerset Trust.

First National consolidated the Boswell office with the company’s Stoystown location.

Somerset Trust conducted community surveys and met with borough officials before making the move, Lohr said.

Somerset Trust now has 21 locations in Somerset, Cambria, Bedford, Westmoreland and Fayette counties, she said.

The bank opening was welcomed by the borough, Councilman David McGinnis said.

“I think it’s going to be a great asset for this small community,” he said.

McGinnis observed that Boswell has many seniors who may not be able to bank in Stoystown, even though it’s only about five miles from the borough.

McGinnis said many businesses  and churches have accounts at First National, including the Boswell Church of God, where McGinnis is pastor.

That could change when Somerset Trust adds a night deposit box, he said.

The branch at the mini mart is open from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Thursdays; 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays; and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.

Residents can open an account from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Friday at the Boswell Borough municipal building.
