Cops: Men chase down thief

CRESSON — Two men chased down a thief after police said he robbed a Chinese restaurant in Cresson Township.

Township police said two men chased John Martin Herman IV, 37, of Portage, after Herman allegedly stole a jug full of money from Grand China restaurant on the Admiral Perry Highway on Friday.

The pair caught Herman behind a building nearby, police said in a criminal complaint.

Police said Herman admitted to the theft.

“Herman admitted he went into the restaurant, sat there for a while and made the decision to take a jug of money.” a court document reads. “Herman said that he took off out the door and the next thing he knew he was being chased. Herman said that he could not run anymore, dropped the money and gave up.”

Police did not say if the men who caught Herman were employees or patrons of the restaurant.

Herman was charged with robbery, theft, receiving stolen property an disorderly conduct. He also was charged with possession of drug paraphernalia after police said they found a drug needle in his pocket.

Herman, of the 100 block of Main Street, was arraigned by on-call District Judge Rick Varner of Salix and sent to the Cambria County Prison after failing to post 10 percent of $40,000.
