IN BRIEF | Continuation granted in embezzling case

GALLITZIN — The Thursday preliminary hearing for a Gallitzin Township official accused of embezzling more than $100,000 over seven years has been continued to July 11.

The court docket for 75-year-old Leonard Cuomo does not list a reason for the continuation.

Officials said Cuomo wrote undocumented expense checks to himself, including almost $4,000 worth to his son, Christoper. It is believed Cuomo, of ailing health, used the money to pay for health insurance premiums.

Crash injuries send man to hospital

SOMERSET – A Somerset man was taken to Windber Medical Center late Monday with moderate injuries after a two-vehicle crash on Glades Pike Road, police said.

State police in Somerset said George D. Gourley, 67, was heading westbound on Route 31 and made a left hand turn directly into the path of an oncoming truck driven by Michael G. Everett, 42, of Jerome.

Police said Gourley will be cited for failing to yield to oncoming traffic.

Financial planning programs scheduled

An program on estate and financial planning issues for senior citizens will feature free desserts at 6:30 p.m. May 2 in Amber Springs Personal Care Residence at LaurelWood Care Center, 100 Woodmont Road, Upper Yoder Township.

Attorney Lauren Cascino, financial planners William Hargreaves and Andrew Ganes, along with Mike Kane from Community Foundation of the Alleghenies and Eileen Graham of LaurelWood, will present information on estate and financial planning, charitable giving, power of attorney, and veteran and spouse benefits.

Additional Learn and Tour events for veterans and their spouses are scheduled beginning today. The programs cover information about financial benefits to pay for continued care and include a meal.

The Learn and Tour events will be held at 6 p.m. today and at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday and May 8 at Amber Springs.

Health fair kicks off wellness program

A health fair beginning at

1 p.m. today kicks off a new wellness program at Hiram G. Andrews Center, 727 Goucher St. in Upper Yoder Township.

There will be informational booths, health screenings and exercise, Zumba and ballroom dance demonstrations.

Peer mentor training session planned

A training session for veterans interested in becoming peer mentors in Cambria County Veterans Court has been scheduled for Friday in Cambria County.

The program will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon at Seminar Theatre in the Hiram G. Andrews Center, 727 Goucher Street in Upper Yoder Township.

Veterans Court is specifically for veterans and is a joint effort between the the James E. Van Zandt Healthcare System, veterans organizations and Cambria County Court.
