A local World War II hero will be honored with a special designation for an important roadway.
Airport Road will be officially designated Buzz Wagner Memorial Highway during a ceremony at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Frankstown Road intersection.
The Lt. Col. B.D. “Buzz” Wagner Chapter 221 of the Air Force Association is holding the dedication, featuring several local dignitaries.
Speakers include Sen. John Wozniak, who introduced the bill creating the honorary designation for the state road in Richland and Conemaugh townships. The effort was spearheaded by the local Air Force Association chapter.
“Buzz Wagner was the first World War II flying ace and a hometown boy,” chapter President Bill Burns of Westmont said.
Wagner earned the recognition as the first World War II Flying Ace by shooting down eight Japanese airplanes over the Philippines. He died when his plane went down on a routine flight in November 1942, from Eglin Field in Florida to Maxwell Field in Alabama.
