Hilltop school board member recovering from crash injuries

JOHNSTOWN — A Westmont Hilltop school board member was recovering Monday in a Maryland Hospital, just days after a crash claimed his wife and four others.

Gordon Smith, 67, of Johnstown, was listed in good condition Monday, a Meritus Medical Center spokeswoman told the Hagerstown Herald-Mail on Monday.

Smith, president of Highland Financial Ltd. in Johns-town, is a Westmont Hilltop school board member. He also serves on the Good Samaritan Medical Center board of directors, the Conemaugh Health System’s website shows.

His wife, Marjorie Smith, 68, was one of five people killed in Saturday's crash, which remains under investigation in Franklin County.

Police said the Smith's SUV was traveling on Fort Ritchie Road in Washington Township, just outside Waynesboro, when it crossed the center line for unknown reasons. It went into the path and struck a motorcycle driven by Douglas Hoffer Jr., 32, of Quarryville, killing Hoffer and a passenger, Colleen Nesbitt, 27, of Gap, Lancaster County, according to Franklin County Coroner Jeffrey Conner.

The impact caused the SUV to spin, causing a second bike driven by David Russell of Mount Joy to hit the SUV broadside.

Russell, 67, and his wife Michelle, 53 were killed, Conner said.
