In brief: Holiday observances will be held Monday

— The Portage Ritual Team will be joined by members of VFW Post 895 and AMVETS Post 150 to provide Veterans Day observances at three area locations.

The first service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Portage Prospect Cemetery. Upon completion, services will be conducted a Wilmore fire hall and Benscreek Citizens Club.

The public is invited to attend all three sites.

In addition, Portage Ritual Team will participate in a Veterans Day program Friday at Portage Area Junior-Senior High School.

Veterans Day Celebration

The Portage Area Junior-Senior High School, 85 Mountain Ave., will hold its 65th Veterans Day Celebration at 10 a.m. Friday in the auditorium.

This year’s program will consist of the “Presentation of Colors” by local veterans groups, student addresses, patriotic band and choral selections, 21-gun salute and a keynote address by Lt. Col. Peter Whalen from the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle.

 In addition to the program, displays of military equipment will be set up by local units.

A lunch will be provided to all participating military members following the program.

The program is open to the public.

Free dinner will be held

at church in Windber

A free community dinner, sponsored by the Windber Area Community Kitchen, will be served from 4 to

6 p.m. Saturday at Windber Calvary United Methodist Church, 1800 Stockholm Ave.

The meal will be served by Berkey Church of the Brethren.

The menu will feature turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, cranberries, vegetables, bread, desserts and coffee or punch.

Breakfast fundraiser

scheduled for Sunday

GALLITZIN – A breakfast fundraiser will be held Sunday to help pay for new lighting to illuminate the U.S. Flag at Lance Cpl. Ralph Fabbri Park in Gallitzin.

The Gallitzin Sportsmen’s Association on McCoy Street will host the pancake breakfast, which is free for active duty service members, $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and children, organizers with the Sportsmen’s Association said.

The event is from 7 a.m. to noon.

Elementary school to hold

Veterans Day breakfast

Greater Johnstown School District will hold its 15th annual Veterans Day breakfast at 9:15 a.m. Thursday at East Side Elementary School, 220 Messenger St. in the Hornerstown section of Johnstown.

The breakfast is free for all veterans.
