Eatery to specialize in burgers

JOHNSTOWN — A food court shop says it will bring “a better burger” to The Galleria mall.

Build-a-Burger owners say they hope to open a food court location in April that will offer fresh ground beef patties and free toppings such as jalapenos, grilled onions and mushrooms.

“We see ourselves as sort of like a Subway for burgers – or a cheaper Five Guys (Burgers and Fries),” said Veronica Wang, a Build-a-Burger co-owner.

“If you want a 4-ounce hamburger, it’s $3.99 ... and you can put whatever you want on it for that price.”

The location will also offer chicken sandwiches.

Wang said the menu is still being finalized but breakfast sandwiches, kids’ meals and milkshakes also will be featured.

The business is locally owned. For Wang and her husband Qing Min “Kyle” Wang, it’s their first venture in business ownership, but they have previous management experience just next door at Yummy Japan, she said.

Renovations are already under way at the site, which was home for years to a Wendy’s location that closed in January.

If all goes well, Build-a-Burger will open April 1, Wang said.
