Food bank offers help for pets whose owners are in need

JOHNSTOWN — Hard economic times can force families to make heart-wrenching decisions concerning their beloved pets.

If buying food for children is a challenge, can purchasing a big bag of dog chow be justified? What can be done when the animal is going hungry? Is it best to give away the pet to people who can better provide for its well being?

The Animal Welfare Ministry of

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church wants to help people through those tough decisions.

The organization recently opened a pet food bank. Any financially struggling Cambria County residents can visit the ministry and ask for some pet food to help their hungry animals.

“There are always people who fall upon hard times,” said Steven Hoover, the animal ministry’s director. “This gives them a hand.”

Providing food to pets is an extension of how St. Mark’s already works to assist individuals facing economic difficulties.

“We have a regular food pantry at the church for people who are in need of some help feeding their family. If you have a pet, a pet is part of your family,” Hoover said.

Anybody in need of food for a pet can contact Hoover at 410-3832 or stevenhoover19

@yahoo.com. Donations of pet food and money are accepted by the church, located at 335 Locust Street in downtown Johnstown.
