ATV driver ran down property owner, police say

David Hurst

HOOVERSVILLE — State police say a Friedens man allegedly used his ATV to run down a Shade Township property owner who was trying to chase him off his land Wednesday.

Then, Derek Maust, 23, circled back and drove over the man a second time, Somerset Trooper Gregg Norton said.

Police said the man was toppled by the ATV after he caught Maust “turfing up” his School Road land in the township.

Norton said Maust will face aggravated assault, simple assault and other charges for the act, which left the Hooversville area man with “major wounds.”

The injured man was apparently “doing better” Sunday, four days after the alleged attack, he said.

According to a separate release sent by state police in Somerset, Maust was charged with driving under the influence near the Route 30 and Cemetery Road intersection in Stonycreek Township about 20 minutes after the incident.

Maust crashed his Polaris on the roadway, police said, noting charges were pending.

No information was available on Maust’s condition after the crash.

Police said their investigation continues.
