Mall pub aims for genial mood

JOHNSTOWN — Shawn Croyle isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel with his new bar.

While Jake’s Pub & Grille is located inside The Galleria mall, Croyle has tried to create the atmosphere of a laid-back, welcoming neighborhood bar.

“I want to give this the ‘local bar’ feel – a friendly atmosphere, quality items with generous portions,” Croyle said. “Somewhere you can stop by to catch the game.”

“I just want to keep it simple,” he added.

The bar’s name reinforces that.

Croyle wanted something short and in the vein of a typical corner bar, so he named his pub after his dog, a yellow Lab.

“People always come in and ask me, ‘Are you Jake?’ ” Croyle said. “Nope.”

Jake’s opened in late December at a location has been home to several bars over the years. Ground Round occupied the site for a number of years. The Tonic Grill, which closed last year, was the most recent tenant.

Croyle, who co-owns Jake’s with his wife, Ashlee, is putting his 12 years in the Johnstown bar business to use there.

The pub’s menu features bar favorites such as pizza, burgers and wings as well as salads and sandwiches like the french dip and reuben made on homemade bread.

Daily specials and game night beer specials will be featured, Coyle said.

Jake’s has 13 TVs and offers a private room for large parties that can accommodate up to 100 guests, Croyle added.

The bar employs 15, he said.
