JOHNSTOWN — Edward Silvetti has helped small- and medium-sized businesses, nonprofits and government agencies achieve their goals for two decades.

He is now ready to try something new.

Earlier this month, Silvetti, 64, announced his plan to step down as the Southern Alleghenies Planning and Development Commission’s executive director on Jan. 2.

The Blair County resident said he wants to dedicate more of his time to volunteer work.

“I’ll never ‘retire’ retire,” he said. “It’s just time to find something else.”

In a resignation letter sent to the commission’s board of directors, Silvetti wrote: “I deeply appreciate this extraordinary opportunity for public service afforded me by each of you, as well as all past board members. Needless to say, and if so requested, I am willing and prepared to provide to the board any insight with respect to SAP&DC, and which I sincerely believe would assist in this organization moving forward upon my retirement.”

Silvetti has managed the organization, which works with numerous partners throughout Cambria, Somerset, Bedford, Blair, Fulton and Huntingdon counties.

He has assisted convention and visitor bureaus, planning commissions, economic development agencies and business service providers in acquiring state and federal funds for projects.

“I think his greatest asset, right now, is his experience,” said Cambria County Commissioner Mark Wissinger, a member of the SAP&DC board. “He’s tailored the organization to the way the funding streams have been.”

The board is beginning the process to find Silvetti’s replacement.

“We’ll be looking for somebody with good management skills and who can secure funding,” said Somerset County Commissioner John Vatavuk, a board member. “That’s very important.”

Wissinger added, “I think there will be some good candidates for the job. That’s what I believe we’ll see.”
