Ace’s to host an evening in paradise

Ruth Rice

JOHNSTOWN — A tropical paradise will bring island breezes and beach music.

The eighth annual Buffettman Beach Party will be held at 6 p.m. March 23 at Ace’s, 316 Chestnut St. in the Cambria City section of Johnstown.

The event is sponsored by Alternative Community Resource Program.

After doors open at 6, happy hour will be held from 7 to 8, and Jimmy Buffett impersonator Tom Watt will perform at 8.

Known as The Buffettman, Watt’s performances range from trop-rock antics to more intimate acoustic fare full of dynamic harmonies and musicianship.

His repertoire includes such Buffett hits as “Margaritaville,” “Fins,” “Come Monday” and “Cheeseburger in Paradise.”

The most requested Buffett song at a Buffettman concert is “A Pirate Looks at 40.”

Watt was awarded the International Guild of Celebrity Impersonators Award for “Best Male Musical Star” for his impersonation of Buffett.

Watt realized his dream of meeting Buffett in August 2005, when he was hired to be Buffett’s photo double during the filming of the family comedy “Hoot” in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

His resemblance to Buffett is so strong, he was mistaken for the singer by crew members.

Prizes will be awarded throughout the evening in paradise for best-dressed tourist, best Parrot Head hat and best-decorated table.

There also will be limbo and hula hoop contests.

Paradise food will include cheeseburgers, hot dogs, munchies, taco salads and taco wraps.

Proceeds will be used for summer programs for at-risk children and teens at ACRP sites in Cambria, Somerset, Bedford, Blair and Clearfield counties.

Extra monies will pay for educational and recreational adventures to museums, parks, science centers and sporting events.

Beverly Bender, ACRP spokeswoman, said there is never a shortage of fun, but there has been a shortage of seats.

“We sell out every year,” Bender said.

Because of the popularity of the event, it is recommended that tickets be purchased in advance at the ACRP office at 131 Market St., downtown Johnstown, or by getting a registration form at
