Somerset prison in lockdown

SOMERSET — SCI-Somerset is in lockdown for the second day after two correction officers were assaulted by inmates, authorities said.

Prison spokeswoman Heide Sroka said a correction officer was assault this week and one was attacked last week, prompting the lockdown

Members of the prison’s SERT unit and officials from other facilities are searching for drugs and weapons, she said.

“Teams go around and search the entire facility,” Sroka said.

She described the search as routine.

Prisoners have been confined to their cells and have meals delivered, she said.

Sroka said she could not give details of the assaults or if weapons were involved. The prison search is expected to conclude today.

SCI-Somerset is a medium-security prison with 2,300 inmates and about 585 employees,
