The St. Francis University Renewable Energy Center (REC) will conduct a wind energy seminar and expo from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 14 at the Loretto campus.
The event is designed to help agricultural producers and small businesses determine the feasibility of wind energy projects on their property.
The seminar is geared toward rural residents interested in developing projects that can reduce energy costs and provide revenue.
Attendees also will learn about wind resources, technology, pros and cons, financial aspects and how to choose an installer.
Other topics will include site assessment, sizing, equipment, installation, permitting and safety. Small, community and utility-scale wind development will be discussed.
An optional tour of a local wind farm will be included to provide a firsthand look at how the resource can be utilized.
Early registrations are being accepted through Monday for $10. Late registrations for $12 will be accepted until May 9.
The cost of lunch is included.
Exhibit space is available to businesses and related organizations, as well as speaker and sponsorship opportunities.

Forum will focus on role models for girls
LORETTO – A forum for the Role Models Matter Project will be held at St. Francis University May 8.
The event is open to teachers, guidance counselors, organization leaders and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) professionals who are interested in becoming role models or increasing awareness for girls in STEM areas.
The event is open to the public and the fee is $25 per person.
The forum will provide an opportunity for attendees to learn how to increase and improve the quality of their outreach to girls in STEM areas.
The day will begin with a continental breakfast and registration at 9 a.m.

Golf tourney profits will support hospital
HOLLIDAYSBURG – Sponsors and golfers can support Altoona Regional Health System Foundation through its annual Life Golf Classic, set for June 24 at Scotch Valley Country Club, Hollidaysburg.
Tournament sponsors for the four-person scramble are UPMC and UPMC Health Plan. The morning shotgun start will be at 8 a.m. If an afternoon round is needed, the shotgun will sound at 1:30 p.m.
Sponsorships range from $1,500 to $5,000. Entrance fee is $150 for individual golfers.
A golf ball drop event is scheduled for 1 p.m. during the tournament.
Tickets are $20 per ball, with cash prizes for the three balls closest to the pin.

Grants available for rural fire companies
HARRISBURG – Rural volunteer fire companies that serve fewer than 10,000 residents – in areas where forest and brush fires are common – can apply for funds through the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources’ Volunteer Fire Assistance Grant Program.
Qualifying companies will be able to use the money toward purchasing mobile or portable radios, installing dry hydrants, performing wildlfire prevention and mitigation work, training wildfire fighters, or converting and maintaining vehicles to be used in fire suppression.
Interested parties can apply at the DCNR’s eGrant webpage by 4 p.m. May 23.
Camp Cadet taking applications
INDIANA – Applications for Camp Cadet of Indiana County are being accepted through May 31.
Indiana County young people ages 13-15 are invited to attend the free, weeklong program at Camp Seph Mack near Penn Run.
The program offers an opportunity to gain firsthand knowledge on a career in law enforcement.

IUP recognized for volunteering efforts
INDIANA – For the fifth consecutive year, Indiana University of Pennsylvania has been selected for the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service learning and civic engagement.
The honor roll is produced by the Corporation for National Community Service in collaboration with the Department of Education, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, and the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. The most recent honor roll recognizes achievements during the 2011-12 academic year.
IUP recorded more than 152,685 hours of volunteer service during 2011-12, up from 145,790 hours during the 2010-11 academic year. Measured with the current national minimum wage, the 2011-12 volunteer work hours would be valued at more than $1.1 million.
