JOHNSTOWN — Get ready to rock.

Lift Johnstown, the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies and the Johnstown Area Heritage Association are teaming up to present a free concert by 10,000 Maniacs at Peoples Natural Gas Park on June 14.

The concert is the kickoff to the summer concert series.

“This is a great way to bring people together to celebrate our community,” said Mike Kane, president of the Community Foundation for the Alleghenies. “The three organizations are working to bring people together for an early summer party, but there also will be a lot of information about all kinds of activities in the community, too.”

The concert also will feature  the Johnstown-based group Smooth Sound, who play a mixture of jazz, rhythm and blues and classic rock.

Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with Smooth Sound taking the stage at 6:15 p.m., followed by 10,000 Maniacs at 8.

10,000 Maniacs is an alternative rock band that formed in 1981 and is considered one of the primary architects of the college rock sound. The Jamestown, N.Y., band is known for its alt-rock radio mainstays like “These Are Days” and “Candy Everybody Wants.” The band’s performance on MTV’s Unplugged, featuring a remake of the classic “Because the Night,” sold more than 4 million copies.

“We’re thrilled to open the season at Peoples Natural Gas Park with such a terrific concert,” said Todd Wagner, chairman of the AmeriServ Flood City Music Festival, which is produced by JAHA. “We want to welcome people into the park, which is a great asset to our community, and encourage everyone to come back for all the great events coming this summer.”

Food will be available for sale from The Phoenix Tavern and A Flair of Country by Corey Crocco.

A cash bar will be available.
