‘New world of foods’ at conference

— More than 700 people from across the country are vegging out on the Pitt-Johnstown campus this week.

The college is hosting the 2011 Vegetarian Summerfest, the annual conference of the North American Vegetarian Society, and attendees are being treated to dozens of classes, seminars and speakers on topics such as vegan cooking and using spices and herbs to perk up meals, debunking nutrition myths, raising vegan children, yoga and meditation and the overall health benefits of this type of lifestyle.

“This five-day conference is an educational event with a vacation feeling,” said Maribeth Abrams, society spokeswoman and a 20-year vegan.

“We have a packed schedule and there is always five or six things that you can do at any given time.”

Panelists consist of doctors, dietitians, environmentalists, cookbook authors and athletes who are eager to share their experiences and offer tips.
