Fight outside Somerset bar leads to charges

SOMERSET — A Somerset man was jailed Sunday in connection with the brutal beating of another man outside a Somerset bar two weeks ago.

Somerset Borough police said 40-year-old Daryl Kelly Ali allegedly fought with a man outside Mel’s Restaurant & Lounge at 1:09 a.m. on April 20.

In a criminal complaint, police said residents found Zachery Allen Koval lying bloody and unconscious outside the bar, located at 127 W. Patriot St.

He was taken to Somerset Hospital.

A witness said he saw Ali fighting with Koval in the middle of the street and then on the sidewalk.

Ali allegedly slammed the man’s head into a van and he fell to the ground.

Ali then walked around the man before allegedly kicking him the head two times, police said.

Ali, of the 1100 block of Village Way, was picked up Sunday on an arrest warrant.

He was arraigned by on-call District Judge Sandra Stevanus of Confluence on charges of aggravated assault, simple assault, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct.

He was sent to Somerset County Jail on $20,000 bond.

Ali reportedly told police he had just left the bar when Koval started to fight with him. Ali said he was just defending himself, police said.
