Why the Cambria Somerset Authority locked the bathrooms

— Cambria Somerset Authority staff have padlocked restrooms at one of their reservoir recreation areas.

Authority members are pondering their next step, saying some of the facilities have been repeatedly trashed in recent months.

The authority, which has opened up the former Bethlehem properties to public use over the past 12 years, is appealing to the public to take better care of the facilities and keep an eye out for those who don’t.

The move comes as one location was a target for graffiti in recent months.

Most recently, CSA staff found restrooms sullied with wastewater-soaked paper towels and human waste on the floor, CSA Manager Earl Waddell said.

“It’s just sad,” he said, noting the board has padlocked the restrooms, located at the breast of the Wilmore Dam.

“All we’re asking is that people treat these facilities with some respect, like they were their own.”

Waddell said the board is mulling options as to the possibility of reopening the restrooms.
