Route 56 accident injures 4

JOHNSTOWN — Four people, including one police officer, received minor injuries as the result of an accident caused by a driver going the wrong way on the Johnstown Expressway near the Widman Street Interchange in the city Friday night.

The wreck happened around 7 p.m. when a car traveling west in an eastbound lane caused a four-car accident, said Johnstown police Officer Erin Kabler.

Responding police asked for officers from Stonycreek Township and Dale Borough to assist, and both cruisers arrived in the westbound lanes, Kabler said.

The Stonycreek cruiser stopped and the officer got out to help at the accident scene.

The Dale cruiser was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of the Stonycreek cruiser, Kabler said.

Johnstown firefighters had to extricate the Dale officer from the cruiser, Kabler said.

Multiple ambulance services attended to the injured, he said.

Names of those involved were not available Friday night.

Police are thankful for the civilians who stopped to render aid and direct traffic, Kabler said.
