Former NFL player to speak on character, success

JOHNSTOWN — An NFL veteran and author will be the featured speaker at an upcoming Greater Johnstown/Cambria County Chamber of Commerce event.

Todd Kalis will speak at the Chamber’s ExCEL luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Holiday Inn-downtown.

Kalis will focus his presentation on character and the foundations for success.

He also will discuss his book, “Pigskin Dreams – The People, Places and Events That Forged the Character of the NFL’s Greatest Players,” for which he interviewed 22 Pro Football Hall of Fame players about their childhood experiences, both on and off the field.

He’ll talk about the early influences that helped forge the character of these players.

Kalis, 47, is a former NFL offensive lineman who played for the Minnesota Vikings (1988–1993), Pittsburgh Steelers (1994) and Cincinnati Bengals (1995).

He also serves as president of NFL Alumni, Pittsburgh Chapter.

Attendees will receive a complimentary copy of Kalis’ book, and there will be a drawing for a signed Rocky Bleier football.

“We hold these luncheons a few times a year, and they are an extension of our community leadership programs to help develop community leaders and encourage civil leadership through mentorship,” said Bob Layo, president of the local chamber.

“They cover different topics and are networking events.”

Layo said ExCEL luncheons are well attended. Depending on the topic, the events can attract 30 to 80 people.

“It’s an opportunity to hear a good speaker who has a good message,” he said.

The cost is $20 for chamber members and $25 for nonmembers.
