Somerset treasurer seeks new term

SOMERSET — One of the region’s longest-serving public officials is seeking re-election.

Donna Matsko-Schmitt, a Democrat, recently announced her plan to run for Somerset County treasurer, a position she has held since January 1990. The primary will be held on May 21.

“I’m very excited about running for re-election,” said Matsko-Schmitt. “I absolutely love this position and my constituents that I interact with every day.” When discussing her view of the treasurer’s position, the Jenner Township resident said, “I’m a taxpayer, born and raised in Somerset County, so it’s my tax dollars also paying for this position. I try to do the best job that I can and give the taxpayers what they’re voting for.”

The 1975 North Star High School graduate has served as the County Treasurers’ Association of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s secretary for the past 10 years. She is a member of the county’s pension and retirement boards, records improvement committee and citizens’ advisory committee for the State Correctional Institution-Somerset.
