Hilltop hikes lunch prices

JOHNSTOWN — The Westmont Hilltop school board on Monday agreed 6-0 to increase the price of student lunches to $1.80 from $1.60 for the 2013-14 school term.

Abstaining from the vote was Rooney Gleason. Board members Kamal Gella and

Dr. Gary Kramer were absent from the meeting.

Board President Diana Schroeder said the National School Lunch Program is mandating that a minimum price for school lunches be in effect by 2015. Westmont’s prices are very low,  so the board decided to increase the price in two increments instead of having one large increase in 2015, she said.

The board agreed 6-0 to seek proposals on health care plans in an effort to save money.

Gleason abstained from the vote because of being a health care consultant.

The board thanked district resident Charles Zimmerman for making an undisclosed donation to help fund the remediation-reading-support program at the middle school.
