UPJ to host math contest

— Area middle-school “mathletes” will compete in the Johnstown chapter contest of the national MathCounts program Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown.

A total of 17 schools and approximately 140 pupils will compete in the contest organized by the Johnstown Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Professional Engineers.  

MathCounts is a national program designed to improve math skills among U.S. students.

The program focuses on middle-school pupils, who are at a crucial stage in developing and sustaining math interest and ability.

Schools being represented are Berlin Brothersvalley, Blairsville, Chestnut Ridge, Conemaugh Township, Everett Area, Ferndale Area, Forest Hills, Hope for Hyndman Charter School, Our Mother of Sorrows, Richland, Rockwood Area, St. Benedict, St. Michael, Saltsburg, Somerset Area, Westmont Hilltop and Windber.

Winners will receive trophies and will advance to the state MathCounts finals to be held March 23 in Harrisburg.
