WINDBER — A Shade Township man was charged with arson after authorities said he twice tried to burn down his ex-girlfriend’s house in Cairnbrook in a dispute over their child.

An arrest warrant was issued on Monday for William Henry Ulderich, 38. Ulderich is currently an inmate at SCI-Camp Hill.

State police in Somerset said Ulderich allegedly set fire to the rear porch of a home on Fourth Street on May 7, 2012, while two people were sleeping inside the dwelling.

The woman said she awoke to find the house full of smoke. A lawn chair on the porch was on fire, troopers said.

The man inside extinguished the fire and called authorities.

Ulderich is accused of setting a second fire at the home on May 20.

His current girlfriend reportedly went to police, saying she received a text message from Ulderich claiming he had entered the residence and set fire to a couch and some of the curtains, troopers said.

She also said Ulderich sent her a photograph of the fire.

When confronted by the state police Ulderich allegedly said: “Well, there probably is a picture or two from the second fire.”

Ulderich is charged with two counts each of arson and related offenses and criminal mischief.

He also faces one charge of reckless endangerment.

The dispute between Ulderich and his ex-girlfriend stems from a child the couple had together, troopers said.

Ulderich is serving a one- to three-year sentence stemming from a burglary case.
