SOFTBALL

High School

Johnstown 9, Windber 0

WINDBER – In her first varsity start, Johnstown’s Courtney Blank fired a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the Trojans trampled Windber on Wednesday.

Blank was also effective at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two doubles. Lindsay Lovrich (three RBIs) and Katie Golby (two RBIs) also had two hits for Johnstown.

Richland 6, Bishop McCort 0

Behind two-hit efforts from Lauren Hoover, Ali Kormanik, Sara Szelong and Rachel Brant, Richland proved to be rude hosts even when on the visiting end of the scoreboard in a win over Bishop McCort.

Emma Petrosky had two of the Crimson Crushers’ three hits.

Bishop Guilfoyle 6, Penn Cambria 3

ALTOONA – Needing a win at home to match Richland’s victory earlier in the afternoon, the Marauders got what they wanted, setting up a showdown for the LHAC title on Saturday.

The Panthers put their runs on the board in the first inning as Jess Delic singled and Cheyanne Sands drove her in.

Following an Andrea Delic walk, Kadee Eberhart hit a two-out, two-run single, driving in Sands and Andrea Delic.

Kiley Dick put the Marauders on the board in the second, leading off the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run. She finished the game with three RBIs while Tiffany Seasoltz had two hits.

Conemaugh Township 15Ferndale 7

Nicole LaPorta earned her first varsity victory on the mound, leading visiting Conemaugh Township over Ferndale.

LaPorta hit a triple and scored two runs.

Ferndale’s Brittany Eisenhuth went 3-for-3, hitting a homer, a triple and a double.

Westmont 3, Meyersdale 1

Ashley Strack’s two-run home run in the fifth broke a tie at 1 and gave Westmont a non-conference win over visiting Meyersdale.

Shauna Hetrick was 2-for-3 at the plate and struck out nine batters.

Courtney Hersch had two hits for the Red Raiders.

BASEBALL

High School

Conemaugh Valley 7, Rockwood 3

Travis Gates led the host Blue Jays with three hits and three runs in a WestPAC win over Rockwood.

Conemaugh Valley also received two hits each from Ryan Soflarsky, John Pudliner, Brian Gates, Dave Rykala and Alex Roberts.

Tyler Baker and Tanner Keefer also had two hits each for the Rockets.

Forest Hills 10, Portage 4

PORTAGE – The Rangers’ Steve Malesky had three hits, scored twice and swatted a solo home run as Forest Hills downed Portage.

Kody Reighard also hit a two-run homer for Forest Hills.

Jeff Jones had two hits and drove in three of the Mustangs’ runs.

Conemaugh Township 10Ferndale 0

The Indians’ Craig Tresnicky hit a two-run homer in the fourth and Conemaugh Township toppled Ferndale in five innings.

Kyle Zambanini had three RBIs and Tom Kapcsos had two RBIs for the Indians.

Chestnut Ridge 9, Hyndman 7

HYNDMAN – Wes Stoudenour struck out 11 batters and the Lions defeated county rival Hyndman. Mike Godissart hit a two-run homer for Chestnut Ridge, which had two hits, three RBIs and two runs from Seth Shaffer and three hits from Drew Manges.

Kyle Bishop, Jeff Crofter and Bobby Deneen each had two hits for the Hornets.

Somerset 9, Johnstown 8

SOMERSET – Brett Hemminger had three hits, including driving in the winning run, and the Golden Eagles edged Johnstown.

Cody Hemminger added a pair of hits for Somerset.

Zack Henry homered and Bobby Helman had two hits for Johnstown.

Shade 18, Berlin 3

CAIRNBROOK – On a day that the Panthers honored the late Michael “Pie” Wilk by dedicating a plaque that will be placed on the home dugout, Shade made quick work of Berlin, downing the Mountaineers in three innings.

Wayne Deneen led the charge with three hits and four RBIs. Brandon Kudasik was 2-for-2 in the win.

Eric Pritts doubled and scored for Berlin.

Late Tuesday

Laurel Valley 10, Homer-Center 4

HOMER CITY – Patrick Hall hit a two-run homer in the first inning, Myers Miller had three RBIs and Brett Marabito doubled twice and drove in three runs as Laurel Valley defeated host Homer-Center.

College

Mounties have two honored

Windber graduate Dan Clark made history Wednesday when he became the first Mount Aloysius baseball player to receive a first-team nod on an all-conference team as the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference announced its team.

Brian Nolan was named the newcomer of the year.

Clark, who played in all 40 games for the Mounties this season, batted .407 with three homers and 38 RBIs. He also stole 19 bases and doubled 16 times.

Nolan was fourth in the conference with a .443 batting average in 40 games and led the conference with 37 stolen bases.

COLLEGE BASKETBALL

SFU women announce changes

LORETTO – St. Francis University women’s basketball coach Susan Robinson Fruchtl announced three changes to her coaching staff.

Robinson Fruchtl announced the resignation of assistant coach Ashli Schwab.

Robinson Fruchtl also announced the addition of Joseph Haigh and Tiffani Selhorst to her coaching staff.
