Local Baseball Briefs 7/9/2009

BASEBALL

AAABA League

Delweld 1, Martella’s 0

Delweld (23-7) closed within percentage points of a tie with Martella’s Pharmacy (22-6) by sweeping a pair of games on Wednesday at Point Stadium.

In the regularly-scheduled contest, Nick Barbera led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and moved up on J.R. Tenney’s sacrifice bunt. George Roberts was walked intentionally. A wild pitch moved the runners to second and third with one out.

Drew Westover had the second intentional walk of the inning. Matt Staub singled into the right-field corner to plate Barbera with the game’s lone run.

Landon Wahl had six strikeouts in 71/3 innings before being relieved by Ben Watkins in the bottom of the eighth. Patrick Smith struck out seven in six innings. Brett Vescovi got the win in relief.

The error-free contest was scoreless through 71/2 innings.

Martella’s still holds first place with .786 percentage points to Delweld’s .767.

Delweld 7, Martella’s 3

Nick Barbera went 4-for-5 and Zach Vignero had three hits as Delweld defeated Martella’s at Point Stadium in the completion of a suspended game.

George Roberts and Drew Westover each had two hits, and Tyler Uphouse doubled for Delweld. Chris Rasky went

3-for-3 with two doubles and a triple for Martella’s.

Principle 15

Roxberry Creamery 7

Principle Development’s Matt Donaldson went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and four runs scored in a win over Roxberry Creamery at Roxbury Park.

Seth Matthews went 3-for-3 with two runs and four RBIs. Matt Stahl had three hits and drove in three runs. T.J. Keklak had three hits, two runs and one run batted in. Matt Snyder had a hit, two RBIs and three runs.

Nate Antone went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and four RBIs for Roxberry. Daly went 2-for-4.

Cambria Legion

Claysburg 3, Westmont 1

CLAYSBURG – Michael Blair’s double for Claysburg highlighted a pitchers’ duel between Westmont’s Jeff Valcheff and Kody Swope that ended with Claysburg winning the opening game of the best-of-3 series.

Cernic’s 8, Somerset 0

Cernic’s got a three-run home run and a double from Zach Henry at Franklin Field as it took the opening game of its best-of-3 series with Somerset.

Alex Martin had three hits and Brian Gates added two for the winners.

Ryan Fisher had two hits for Somerset.

Eastern League

Altoona 1, Erie 0

ALTOONA – Curve third baseman Pedro Alvarez doubled home outfielder Jose Tabata in the bottom of the first inning, and that was all starter Kyle Bloom needed as the Altoona Curve defeated the Erie SeaWolves (AA-Detroit Tigers) in the middle game of a three game series.

Bloom (2-4) picked up his second win of the season after matching his season long start throwing six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and striking out a season-high seven batters.

Sean Smith finished off the seventh Curve shutout of the season with three innings of work, giving up just one hit to pick up his seventh save of the year.

Alvarez finished the night

1-for-3 to extend his current hitting streak to six games, his longest since joining the Curve on June 23.

Gorkys Hernandez and Miles Durham each doubled for Altoona.

Durham now has four extra base hits in his last three games and Hernandez matched his Curve best hitting streak at five games.

The Curve (31-55) finish up the three game series with the SeaWolves (46-39) this afternoon at Blair County Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. Probable starters are right-hander Yoslan Herrera (4-0, 4.05) for Altoona and southpaw Ramon Garcia (1-0, 6.21) for Erie.
