Sports briefs - 7/23

The Tribune-Democrat

BASEBALL

AAABA League

Delweld 12, NORAC Lab 3

Delweld posted its 20th win of the season in the opener of Tuesday’s Point Stadium doubleheader.

George Roberts went 3-for-3 with two singles, a double and three RBIs to lead Delweld.

Brandon Varmecky was 3-for-4 with three singles and a run scored.

Matt Staub doubled twice, drove in two runs and scored. Mark Tomcik went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.

NORAC scored its runs in the first inning off a ground-out, walk, single, double, another ground-out and back-to-back singles.

MCS Bulldogs 5, Principle 4

Matt Whiteman had two hits and drove in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh as the MCS Bulldogs edged Principle Development at Roxbury Park.

Whiteman had two RBIs in support of Cody Swope, who allowed two earned runs.

Center fielder Kyle Rose supported Swope in a different manner when he robbed Principle’s Matt Stahl of a potential three-run homer in the fourth by reaching over the snow fence in center, catching the ball and then tumbling over the fence.
