Dukes athletes down Red Flash

For much of the first half on Thursday night, St. Francis not only kept pace with Duquesne, but managed to hold the lead. But the Atlantic 10 Dukes used an 8-2 run in the final 39 seconds of the half to set the tone in an 83-72 victory over the Red Flash at DeGol Arena.“Coming in with Duquesne, we knew it’s really hard to simulate their athleticism with their three, four and five men,” said first-year St. Francis coach Don Friday, who coached his first home game. “You saw as the game wore on. ... I thought we went toe-to-toe with them the first 16 minutes of that game. But when they can continue to do that (uptempo style) and go to their bench, that starts to wear on you.”

Blueliners buoying the bunch

The defense, it seems, never rests for the Johnstown Chiefs this season.Even with two prospects called up to the AHL, Chiefs coach Ian Herbers has a solid group of eight defensemen that has made a significant impact on a team with 10 wins and 20 points atop the ECHL North Division.

Steelers defense to face a beat-up Bengals O-line

Think the Steelers have offensive line problems this season? Better check out the Cincinnati Bengals tonight at Heinz Field for some real problems. At full strength, the 1-8-1 Bengals would pit their last-ranked offense against the 7-3 Steelers’ top-ranked defense. It’d be a mismatch, even without the Bengals’ injury woes. The Bengals, for tonight’s game, have ruled out left tackle Levi Jones (back), left guard Andrew Whitworth (ankle) and top line backup Scott Kooistra (knee).

It looks as though all of Johnstown-area Atlantic Broadband customers will be able to watch tonight’s Pittsburgh Steelers game after all.The NFL said on Wednesday that it had reconsidered its blackout of the game against the Cincinnati Bengals, and would allow it to appear on cable channel 15 – WPCW.

Holding the line

What a difference a year made. The Portage defense limited Purchase Line to just 10 carries for 24 yards and 2-for-5 passing for 3 yards in the second half as the Mustangs defeated the Red Dragons 26-7 Saturday night in District 6 Class A semifinal action at Portage Memorial Stadium.“We’re the first team ever to get to go to the carpet, as we call it,” running back Tommy Burgan said. “It’s a really great feeling.”

Blocked punt sparks Penn State

Nathan Stupar didn’t know he had blocked Chris Hagerup’s punt until after the play, but the pain in his forearm gave him a pretty good idea that he had.Stupar’s punt block with 35 seconds left in the first half allowed Penn State (10-1, 6-1 Big Ten) to enter the locker room with the lead, and helped the Nittany Lions overcome a sluggish start to defeat Indiana 34-7 and keep their Rose Bowl hopes alive.

The North Star Cougars had demons to exorcise on Saturday night, looking to make up for a heartbreaking loss in the PIAA quarterfinals a year ago.Consider the demons exorcised, and with them went the Langley Mustangs. For the first time, a District 5 football team won a PIAA playoff game beyond the district championship, as the Class AA Cougars lambasted the District 8 representative Mustangs 62-14.

Tullis, UPJ start strong

If anything was to be taken away from Pitt-Johnstown’s season opener Saturday night, it’s that the more things change, the more they do, in fact, stay the same. By following their coach’s motto of “business as usual” heading into the game against Penn State-Greater Allegheny, the Mountain Cats put aside an array of distractions to beat the Lions, 103-44, at the Sports Center.
