Bedford beats South Fayette

LOYSBURG – Sebastian Jene-Aluja scored a pair of goals as Bedford High School boys soccer team defeated District 7 runner-up South Fayette 4-2 in a PIAA Class AA playoff game at Northern Bedford High School on Tuesday night.

District 5 champion Bedford

(20-0-2) scored quickly at 4 minutes, 48 seconds into the game, as senior foreign exchange student Jene-Aluja put the Bisons on top.

South Fayette (17-4-2) tied the game via Brian Coyne’s goal, but goals by Bedford’s Lalo Munoz and Jene-Aluja’s second of the night just 27 seconds later made it 3-1 at halftime.

Bedford’s Garrett Thomas tallied Bedford’s fourth goal of the night. In the closing minutes, South Fayette scored a goal to set the final.

Blake Baer had two assists for Bedford, and Logan Myslenski had an assist.

Bedford will face District 10 champion Harbor Creek on Saturday. Bedford won 1-0 when the teams met in last year’s PIAA quarterinfal round.

Two Pirates win batting awards

NEW YORK – World Series MVP David Ortiz has won his sixth Silver Slugger award as the top designated hitter in voting by major league managers and coaches.

Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, Detroit third baseman Miguel Cabrera and Minnesota catcher Joe Mauer each were selected for the fifth time.

Silver Slugger awards are given to the top offensive player at each position in the American and National Leagues. They were handed out Wednesday night on the MLB Network.

Nine of the 18 recipients were first-time winners with major league home run and RBI leader Chris Davis of Baltimore taking home a bat-shaped trophy as the best AL first baseman.

The Orioles led all teams with three winners: Outfielder Adam Jones and shortstop J.J. Hardy joined Davis in being picked for the first time. Pittsburgh, Detroit and St. Louis each had two winners.

First-time selectee Pedro Alvarez (third base) was joined by Pirates teammate Andrew McCutchen. The star outfielder won his second prize.
