HERSHEY — Four local wrestlers still have hopes for gold at the PIAA Class AA Wrestling Championships.
Ligonier Valley’s Josh Patrick and Bedford’s Ryan Easter won in the 120-pound quarterfinals this morning while Forest Hills’ Cody Law (160 pounds) and Chestnut Ridge’s Austin Buttry (285) join them in the semifinals, which will be contested at 6:30 this evening at the Giant Center.
Patrick beat Wyalusing freshman Collin Edsell 11-3 and will face Bethlehem Catholic’s Darian Cruz tonight. Easter edged Saegertown’s Tyler Vath 4-2 and will take on South Side Beaver’s Nathan Reckner tonight.
Law beat Redbank Valley’s Cole Shirey 9-3 and has Northeast Regional champion Ty Walterof Mifflinburg standing between him and a second consecutive state finals appearance.
Buttry beat Tussey Mountain’s Mitchell Hall 7-4 on a late takedown and two backpoints. Hall had beaten Buttry three times this season.
Forest Hills’ Triston Law (106), Ligonier Valley’s Justin Patrick (113), Chestnut Ridge’s Tyler Dibert (170) and Somerset’s Jacob Nickelson (195) are the only other local wrestlers still alive in the consolation. Each will earn a medal, although which place will depend on how they fare this evening and tomorrow afternoon.
Eliminated today were Richland’s Nick Naglic (138), Bedford’s Tanner Williams (152), Conemaugh Township’s Taylor Cahill (152), Berlin Brothersvalley’s Bryce Fochtman (160), Meyersdale’s Gavin Berkley (182), Chestnut Ridge’s Dan Albright and Westmont Hilltop’s Don Shovestull.
