Jr. Blues trip Tomahawks in six-round shootout

Springfield — The Springfield Jr. Blues defeated the Johnstown Tomahawks 3-2 in an overtime shootout on Friday night at the Nelson Center.

The Tomahawks gained a point in the NAHL North Division and are in a tie for third place with the Janesville Jets.

Janesville beat the second-place Michigan Warriors 6-3 on Friday.

Johnstown’s Shane Bednard scored with 4:01 left in regulation to help the Tomahawks force overtime.

Dakoda Menslage and Mitch Hall were each credited with assists on the game-tying goal.

Neither team scored in the overtime period.

Springfield won the six-round shootout, 3-2, scoring on its final two attempts, first to extend the one-on-one session and then to win it.

Johnstown (26-23-5) has 57 points to match Janesville (27-23-3).

Michigan (61 points) and Port Huron (70) are atop the division.  Soo (53) and Springfield (53) round out the North, with both four points behind the Tomahawks.

Johnstown has six games remaining, including a rematch tonight against the Jr. Blues, who also have six games left.

The other four teams in the division each have seven games left.

Springfield’s Igor Vladykovskii opened the scoring 15:14 into the first period.

Johnstown tied it on Casey Linkenheld’s goal 1:51 into the second. Jordan Watt had an assist.

The Jr. Blues took a 2-1 advantage via Lester Lancaster’s goal at 3:35 of the third. But Bednard tied it on the power play at 15:59.

Tomahawks goaltender Alex Okicki stopped 46 of 48 shots on goal in regulation and overtime.

Tyger Howat had 36 saves for the Jr. Blues.

In the shootout, Johnstown’s Zach Wallace converted in the second round and Mitch Hall hit the net in the fifth round to give the Tomahawks a 2-1 lead.

Alex Baskakov had scored in the third round for Springfield.

Facing a loss, Springfield’s Logan Wendling scored in the fifth round.

Trevor Stone netted the game-winner in the sixth round.

    Polanco, hitting just .133 in his previous 11 games, smacked a bases-loaded single with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh in front for good.
