LHAC, WestPAC titles up for grabs

JOHNSTOWN — The winter weather has played havoc on the area athletic schedules and athletic directors have been challenged to reschedule events in a smaller and ever-narrowing time frame.

With that in mind, several teams still have to nail down their berths in Saturday’s WestPAC and Laurel Highlands Conference basketball championship games.

The WestPAC boys and girls championships are set for Saturday at Pitt-Johnstown’s Sports Center with the girls set to begin at 6:30 p.m. followed by the boys title games.

The Portage girls were the first to earn their section title and earn a spot in the WestPAC championship game, where the Mustangs will be trying to defend their crown.

In the South girls standings, Berlin Brothersvalley and Shade are battling for the spot and ironically, North opponents are standing in their way.

The Mountaineers have to defeat the Mustangs and Windber to gain the advantage while the Panthers, who upset Berlin last week on the road, face Conemaugh Valley and Ferndale as their obstacles.

On the boys side, Shanksville-Stonycreek has clinched the South Section and the Conemaugh Township boys nailed down their North Section berth on Saturday with their victory over Ferndale.

The Laurel Highlands championships are scheduled for Richland High School with the girls to tip-off at 6 p.m. followed by the boys game.

The boys teams have already been determined with unbeaten Bishop Carroll claiming the Section 1 slot and defending champion Bishop McCort the Section 2 spot.

Currently, the Westmont Hilltop girls hold the top spot in Section 2 and are looking for their fifth straight appearance in the championship game.

The Hilltoppers, who control their own fate, hold a game-and-half lead over Bishop McCort, which Westmont defeated for the second time this season on Friday.

In Section 1, Forest Hills, which split with Bishop Guilfoyle, is currently in the lead, a game ahead of the Marauders, and must beat Penn Cambria on Wednesday to get the position.

Bishop Guilfoyle plays Cambria Heights on Thursday and Bishop Carroll on Friday.
