Berlin defeats Shade for chance at 5-A boys title

SOMERSET — The semifinal game at Somerset Area High School between WestPAC rivals, Berlin-Brothersvalley and Shade, who had split their regular season games turned into a one-sided Mountaineers victory by a 64-42 score.

The No. 1 seeded Mountaineers will advance to the District 5 championship game against Forbes Road, which defeated Shanksville-Stonycreek 58-53 in an overtime game.

The title game is at 8 p.m. at the UPJ Sports Center on Tuesday.

The game was well played by both teams in front of a full gym of vocal fans from both schools. Neither team got into shooting one-plus fouls and only 11 free throws were attempted in the game.

Shade had their only lead of the game off the opening tip with a B.J. Spangler basket. From that point on, a patient Berlin offense controlled the tempo of the game.

Zac Cooney’s only basket of the night tied the game and Dante Paul’s trey gave the Mountaineers the lead, which they never relinquished at 5:31.

Berlin’s Brentson Harding’s two 3-pointers highlighted a 15-11 scoring margin in the opening quarter.

Nash Walker from Shade answered with seven of his 13 total points, including one of two treys.

Berlin scored six straight points to open the second quarter. Nick Stockwell and Steve Lotinsky were the recipients of back-to-back assists for layups from Dante Paul from the top of the key to force a Shade timeout when the lead became 21-11.

Berlin’s Jacob Snyder added two free throws before Nash Walker’s trey and a Chase Kiser hoop made the score 23-16 Berlin.

Another 10-point run by Berlin, which included another Harding trey and one by Jacob Snyder, quickly ballooned the lead to 33-16.

Snyder added his second trey and a hoop along the baseline at the buzzer to close the half with a 38-20 Berlin lead. The Mountaineers carried the second quarter by a 23-9 margin to put the game out of reach for Shade.

The third quarter had the teams trading baskets, with Berlin holding a 15-11 edge. Snyder had seven points in the frame and Nick Stockwell added two baskets. Stockwell controlled the rebounding with eight of his team’s 24 in the game.

Shade’s Aaron Fyock scored 11 of his 13 points in the final frame, having recovered from an earlier nose injury in the game. The teams played to an 11 point draw in the final eight minutes.

Berlin was paced in scoring by Jacob Snyder (21), Nick Stockwell (10), and Trevon Ward (10). Ward also had an outstanding defensive effort on Shade’s Nash Walker.

Nash Walker and Aaron Fyock each had 13 for the Shade Panthers who end their season with a 17-9 record.

Berlin’s Tanner Prosser quipped, “I was proud of our execution and intensity tonight. The entire team did a nice job.”
