Local High School Baseball and Softball Briefs 4-15-14

— Baseball

Richland  4, Bishop Carroll 1: In Ebensburg, Carlo Kazmierczyk pitched a one-hitter as the Rams defeated the Huskies on the road.

Kazmierczyk struck out four batters and walked one. Tyler Mikesic went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs for Richland. Jack Shirk went 2-for-3 and scored twice.

Bishop Carroll’s Ken Weiland doubled for his team’s lone hit and scored in the fourth.

Blacklick Valley 9-14, Harmony 0-1: In Nanty Glo, Blacklick Valley swept a pair of one-sided games over visiting Harmony.

In Game 1, Derek Cesarz went 2-for-3 with a triple and scored two runs. Luke Galko doubled and scored a run. Cory Villa went 2-for-3 and scored a run. Dakoda Sheesley pitched six innings and struck out five.

In Game 2, Cesarz went 2-for-2 with a triple and a double. Galko had two hits, including a triple and two runs scored. Anthony Cornetti went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs. Isaac Wurm had two hits, and Evan Marsh pitched a complete game on his 16th birthday.

Northern Cambria 12, United 2 (5): In Northern Cambria, John Hornick smacked a two-run homer, and Joe Olish went 3-for-3 with a double and four stolen bases as the Colts beat visiting United in five innings. Adam Weiland had a solo home run for the Colts.

Bedford 16, Central Cambria 2 (5): In Ebensburg, Zach Shaffer had three hits, Kyle Miller had three hits, and four other players had two hits in Bedford’s win at Central Cambria.

Isaac Klim, Austin Montgomery, Andrew Smith and Cole Yingling each had multiple hits for the Bisons. Central Cambria’s T.J. Adams and Will Seymour each had two hits.

Greater Johnstown 2, Penn Cambria 0: In Cresson, Grant Noon drove in a run and picked up the save as the Trojans blanked the Panthers. Nate Litvin also had a run batted in for Greater Johnstown.

Zane Itle pitched a complete game for Penn Cambria, striking out nine batters. Andrew George had two hits for the hosts. 

Bishop McCort 9, Forest Hills 3: In Sidman, Nick Gjurich had three hits and drove in three runs, and Ethan Neiderhiser tossed a complete game as Bishop McCort came back to beat host Forest Hills.

Cameron Rock had two hits, and Jeremy Adams had two hits and drove in a pair.

Alex Murphy hit a two-run single in the second inning to lead Forest Hills. The Rangers led 3-0 after two innings and 3-1 entering the sixth. Murphy pitched five innings, allowing one hit and one run. He left the game after throwing 103 pitches.

Bishop McCort scored two in the sixth and six in the seventh to pull away.

Somerset 15, Bishop Guilfoyle 9: In Altoona, the Golden Eagles rapped out 14 hits and took advantage of seven Marauders errors all while enduring a one-hour rain delay as they remained unbeaten. Raven Beeman and Doug Berkebile each had four hits for Somerset.

Bishop Guilfoyle’s D.J. Kitt had two hits and four RBI while teammate Aaron Yasulitis also had two hits. 



Softball

Northern Cambria 16, United 6 (5): In Northern Cambria, Emily Pavelko had two hits, including a two-run homer in the second inning and added a three-run triple as the Colts beat visiting United. Pavelko had five RBI and scored twice.

The Colts capitalized on 13 walks.

Bishop McCort 3, Forest Hills 1: Ricki Conrad scattered four hits and struck out six as Bishop McCort edged visiting Forest Hills.

Conrad helped her own cause with a run-producing single. Kyrsten Vitovich had a two-run double for the Crushers. Forest Hills’ Makena Baumgardner singled, stole a base and scored the Rangers’ lone run.

Blairsville 13, Ligonier Valley 3: In Blairsville, Emily Okapal tossed a one-hitter, Abby Okapal scored three runs and drove in a pair, and Cassidy Edmondson had two hits, two runs and three RBI as host Blairsville defeated Ligonier Valley.

Emily Small drove in two runs for the Bobcats. Ligonier’s Hannah Yeskey had the Rams’ only hit. Ligonier had seven players reach base on walks.

Harmony 6-8, Blacklick Valley 3-3: In Nanty Glo, Sara Maseto and Jen Brink each had two hits for the Owls in Game 1 of a doubleheader sweep of Blacklick Valley. Marina Stiles had three hits for the Vikings, who received two more hits from Nicole Skubik.

In Game 2, Harmony capitalized on 11 Blacklick Valley errors en route and used two-hit efforts from Brooke Sider and Alice Pennington.  Alissa Campbell and Breanna McGhee each had two hits in defeat.

HOPE for Hyndman 10, Windber 0 (6): In Hyndman, Jessica Ringler went 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI in a victory over visiting Windber.

Ringler also pitched a three-hitter. Kadi Cosgrove had two hits, including a triple and two runs for HOPE for Hyndman. Lindsey Shroyer went 2-for-3 with a double and a run batted in.

Hanna Tomlinson was perfect with a single in her lone at-bat.

Penn Cambria 8, Greater Johnstown 2: The visiting Panthers used 10 strikeouts from pitcher Kelly Yusko, who was pretty handy at the plate in a two-hit, two-triple, two-RBI and two-run day. Katie Little (two runs scored), Caitlyn Sheehan, Ashton Hite and Riley Anderson each had two hits for Penn Cambria.

Greater Johnstown scored its runs on a two-RBI triple from Lexi Lindrose.

Shade 11, North Star 3: In Cairnbrook, Lexi Meck tripled and singled twice, and Mikayla Ott had two doubles and a single in Shade’s win over visiting North Star.

Emma Spinelli singled three times, and Kaily Karl had two singles, including her 50th career hit for the Panthers. North Star’s Morgan Cannin doubled and singled, and Aubrey Moss doubled.

Bishop Carroll 12, Richland 0 (6): Visting Bishop Carroll saw Sarah Gomish cross the plate four times on top of her 2-for-4 effort in a six-inning win over Richland. Abby Simmons, who held the Rams to two hits, was also 2-for-4 for the Huskies.

Courtney Syfert and Ally Black had hits for Richland, which commited nine errors.

Cambria Heights 3, Westmont Hilltop 2: In Westmont, Hannah Smithmyer hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning, and Cori James pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts and only one walk as visiting Cambria Heights edged the Hilltoppers.

Taylor Hoover went 2-for-2 with a double and one run batted in for Hilltop. Kaylee Grassmyer had nine strikeouts and one walk on the mound for Westmont.
