JOHNSTOWN — TENNIS

Bedford player wins tournament

Sebastian Jean-Aluja of Bedford won Monday’s District 5 Class AA boys singles tournament.

Jean-Aluja defeated Brandon Statler of Windber 6-1, 6-1 in the finals.

In the quarterfinals, Jean-Aluja downed Tussey Mountain’s John Clark 10-3 while Statler dispatched Somerset’s Jim Devries 10-1.

Jean-Aluja held off Somerset’s Tammaso Demozzi 10-6 in the semifinals while Statler defeated the Titans Iacapo Ricci 10-3.

The District 5 champion will advance to the PIAA Championships to face the District 3-3 player on May 23-24 at the Hershey Racquet Club in Hershey.

Tussey, Guilfoyle are top seeds

The District 5 Class AA team tournament opens on Wednesday while District 6 begins next Monday.

Top-seeded Tussey Mountain plays host to No. 4 Windber while third-seeded Somerset is at No. 2 Bedford at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The winners of the opening matches will meet for the championship at 3 p.m. Thursday at Tussey Mountain.

In District 6, top-seeded Bishop Guilfoyle has a first-round bye. On May 5 at 4 p.m., No. 6 Bishop McCort is at third-seeded Central Cambria and No. 5 Westmont Hilltop is at No. 4 Richland. The other pairing has No. 7 Huntingdon at second-seeded Juniata at 3:30.

The semifinals will be on May 6 with the championship on May 7 at the site of the highest remaining seed.

BASEBALL

Point game will benefit charity

Bishop McCort and Greater Johnstown will use their Point Stadium doubleheader on May 7 to raise money for the American Center Society in honor of cancer survivor Jeremy Adams, a senior on the Crushers baseball team.

The Strike Out Cancer City Game  event will begin with Game 1 at 4:30 p.m.. Game 2 is to follow at 7 p.m. at the Point.

Strike Out Cancer T-shirts will be sold for $10 with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society in Adams’ honor. Information: Stephanie Paratore at 536-8991 during normal school hours today.

    Andrew McCutchen hit a tiebreaking single in the seventh inning, Neil Walker followed with a home run and the Pirates overcame a three-run deficit to beat the Rockies 5-3 Sunday.

  • Dodgers Pirates Polanco, Walker lift Pirates over Dodgers

    Gregory Polanco broke out of a slump with a solo home run and a tiebreaking two-run single, lifting the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 12-7 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Tuesday night.
    Polanco, hitting just .133 in his previous 11 games, smacked a bases-loaded single with two outs in the sixth to put Pittsburgh in front for good.
